Honorable Mention
The Quintessential Peach
Janis (Carole MacRury)

Because of the way he chose a peach –
the gentle, testing press;

because of the way his eyes closed
with that first mouthed bite;

because he didn’t wipe juice
from lips, from chin –

this is why I chose him,

this man who worships the way
shadows play over curves,
crevices, folds;

who paints me, like Rubens,
with eyes and hands – skin
to central core;

because of the way he holds
and molds me;

the way he craves flesh,
juice
and stone.
